Some pretty words...

Cher's image is apparent: moody, emotional, touching, nostalgic and seducing. You can easily call her music communication. Or even better, call it emotional chemistry between singer and fan. It's not difficult to let your thoughts wander around with her wonderful voice and music. From behind the microphone she takes you gently, completely into her world. Her voice is the vehicle, the music is the highway. Cher is one of a kind. She is the only female singer that started in the sixties and is still consistently succesfull and incredibly popular today. As we all know; Cherilyn Sarkisian had top-10 hits in each decade. How amazing is that? (60's: "I Got You Babe" #1, "Bang Bang" #2, 70's: "Gypsies, Tramps And Thieves" #1, "Half Breed" #1, "Dark Lady" #1, 80's: "If I Could Turn Back Time" #3, "After All" #6, 90's: "The Shoop Shoop Song" #1, "Love Can Build A Bridge" #1, "Believe" #1 and 00's: "The Music's No Good Without You" #8! (And of course alot more top-10 hits!) It's amazing! Look at all the endless covers of every magazine where she appeared on from "Ms." and "Cosmopolitan" to "Time" and "People". Everytime when I think about that, I get so enthusiastic! She won an Academy Award for Best Actress in the romantic comedy "Moonstruck", she also won Golden Globe awards, People's Choice awards, Billboard awards, Emmy awards and a Grammy award. All together; Cher has sold around 200 million albums! She made a lot of carreer moves, a lot of ups and downs, comebacks, and she frequently reinvented herself. And today, Lady Cher is still HOT; in fabulous Las Vegas! It's been almost 46 years since she started out with her very first song "Ringo I Love You", recorded at age 17 in the spring of 1964. In those 46 amazing years she brought us 37 albums (including duet albums with Sonny and Gregg), 13 movies, two top-10 rated television shows, tv-specials, books, concert tours, clothing, fragrances, and because all of that; a huge, huge deal of great, wonderful collector's items... which by the way, I love to collect. But most important of all that, she gives us love. Pure love and joy. I'm sure Cher has no idea how important she is to millions and millions of people around the world. There are no words that can describe how thankfull I am for that. Because she is my absolute #1 favorite!! The only true love of my life. I am so proud of her. She is the Number One Diva in the world! There has never been anyone like her, and there will most definately never be anyone like her anymore. Cher is truly one of a kind. Unique in every sense of the word. For example, her record-breaking "Farewell (Never Can Say Goodbye) Tour", which took her all over the world again, ended in April 2005 in the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. I was blessed to be there and to witness the magic of those two last shows of the Tour, and also- to greet her again, a year after we first met. With the Farewell Tour, she did 325 shows worldwide!! This is something even 20-30 year old singers can barely achieve. But Cher did it, being in her 50's. What other singer did something like this? Duhh, no one! And of course, this got published in the 2007 edition of the Guiness Book of World Records. Because the Tour broke all box-office records. NBC's televised special of "The Farewell Tour" back in November 2002 drew more than 19 million viewers and won three Emmy Awards! The DVD and CD release of the show became instant worldwide bestsellers. To "promote" the Tour, Cher released "The Very Best of Cher", an amazing 2-cd set with 42 of her classics. It has sold over 2 million copies worldwide, and achieved a double-platinum status. No surpise. Cher turns 64 next May, and yet she shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. In May 2008 she started her brand new "Cher" show in Las Vegas which got the greatest and best reviews and recordbreaking ticketsales. She rocks Las Vegas and us for 3 years, with a total amount of 200 shows! A whole new generation of Cher-fans is rising. Also- a new movie got announced; it's called "Burlesque" and she will star opposite Christina Aquilera. Next to her brand new amazing show, she is also involved in tons of projects regarding charity foundations, the CCA of course. And don't even get me started about the way she looks. This woman simply has it all, and she does it all. Big time. We also said that 11 years ago, when "Believe" came out, but now- we are definately sure of it and she proved it to us big time, over and over again. Lady Cher is timeless.

You rock, Cher!! You're the BEST!

All my love, Erick image

I used a stars-system with every song: * , just so you can see the availability status of each song and album.

No star means: Very easy to get on CD
* means: Released on cd, but (very) difficult to get
** means: Only released on LP (or: both LP and single), not on CD
*** means: Only released on a 45-single and/or EP, but not on LP or CD

1964:

- Ringo I Love You*

This is her very first song! Recorded in the Spring of 1964 at age 17. The single is released under the name of Bonnie Jo Mason. Phil Spector (who co-produced the single) wanted real American names for his singers. So Cherilyn Sarkisian didn't quite fit. The single dissapeared without a trace, without charting. The local radio-stations wouldn't even play it because they thought a guy was singing a love song as a dedication to Ringo Starr (from The Beatles). "Beatle Blues" is on its b-side. It's a typical Phil Spector instrumenal song.

"Ringo I Love You" is available on cd, yes on cd! The cd is called "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Rock & Roll - Vol. 1"; the disc is filled with songs about- and for The Beatles. "Ringo" is also available on another cd called "Flabby Road".

Singles:

- Baby Don't Go / Walkin' The Quetzal (<- instrumental)
- Love Is Strange / Let The Good Times Roll
- Do You Want To Dance / Let The Good Times Roll

This is the official first Sonny & Cher album. But they only contain 5 songs by Sonny & Cher, actually Caesar & Cleo; their first recording names. They are the ones that I marked bold. These are the 5 first songs they ever recorded. (Strange thing is though, that "The Letter" wasn't included on this album since it was already recorded in late '63/early '64 (according to sources). If that is true, it would be the actual very first Sonny & Cher song EVER). Also strange is, that Sonny and Cher always claimed that "Baby Don't Go" was their first recording together. However, these 5 songs were released as singles, and they were issued under their very first artist-names "Caesar & Cleo". "Baby Don't Go" became a huge hit after "I Got You Babe" hit the charts in the summer of '65, a year later. "Baby Don't Go" charted #8 in the USA and #11 in the UK, and is still nowadays very popular on radio stations. In "Love Is Strange" you can actually hear Sonny & Cher call each other "Caesar" and "Cleo". Great song, but it was a shy, small hit. Well, in other words; it was the most lowest charting song of Sonny & Cher ever. It peaked at a cold (and also undeserved) #131 in Billboard in April '65, also right after "I Got You Babe" became a hit. This album charted #69 in the USA.

Cher History was literally made, when Cher treated us with a new, rockin' live-version of "Let The Good Times Roll" is her Las Vegas shows in the spring of 2009. It came as a huge surprise to me!

Singles:

- All I Really Want To Do / I'm Gonna Love You
- Dream Baby / Stan Quetzal (<- instrumental) (This single was released under her full name "Cherilyn" a year earlier, in 1964.)

This is Cher's very first solo album! Produced by Sonny for Imperial records. It contains a lot of happy-mooded, uptempo rock and rollers, especially the already in October '64 recorded "Dream Baby", which was released a month later in November. "Dream Baby" was her second solo song after "Ringo I Love You" earlier that year. The title-song "All I Really Want To Do" was Cher's very first hit-record. It charted #15 in the USA and #9 in the UK. By that time, Sonny had mixed thoughts about making Cher record Dylan's "All I Really Want To Do". Because The Byrds also recorded it. So Sonny wasn't sure about releasing the song. But he decided to release it anyway. That same week of its release, The Byrds' version also came out. Their version peaked at #40 in Billboard, and Cher's reached #15. This album charted #16 in the USA and #7 in the UK.

- Just You / Sing C'est La Vie
- The Letter / Spring Fever (<- instrumental)

This is the first, full Sonny & Cher album. "I Got You Babe" charted #1 in Billboard. It also charted #1 in the UK and it was a huge hit all over the world. "Just You" charted #20, "The Letter" charted #75 and "Sing C'est La Vie" peaked at an unexpected #1 in Belgium. "I Got You Babe" became one of the most populair songs ever made by the couple, and became one of the last century's classics. The Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody" features only Cher. She made a wonderful ballad of it! This album charted #2 in the USA and #7 in the UK.

- I'm Gonna Love You

Cher recorded this song for her album "All I Really Want To Do" but it didn't make it. So Sonny released the song on the b-side of the "All I Really Want To Do" single. Later, in 1967, "I'm Gonna Love You" is re-released on the "Good Times" soundtrack album, and used in the movie.

Cher's second album. This album produced even bigger hits than her first one did. "Bang Bang" was a huge hit and charted #2, and #3 in the USA and UK respectively. "Where Do You Go" charted #25. I guess we can say that this is her very first major hit-record. With "Bang Bang", Cher was definately settled in the American pop culture. The album contains some incredible covers of "A Young Girl", the sensational "Ol' Man River" which shows the huge power and range Cher already had on this early album. This album charted #26 in the USA and #11 in the UK.

- Alfie / She's No Better Than Me
- Will You Love Me Tomorrow / Reason To Believe (this single was released in 1972 to promote the 2 LP-set "Cher Superpack - Vol. 1")

This album brought us some great and successfull singles. "Sunny" charted #2 in Holland, #4 in Sweden, and #32 in the UK, but unfortunately it didn't chart in the USA. Later in 1979, the band "Boney M" made an awesome disco version of "Sunny". "Magic In The Air" charted #43 in the UK and didn't chart in the USA either and "Alfie" charted #32 in the USA. Next to these, she mad beautiful versions of "Cruel War", "Catch The Wind" and "Homeward Bound". This album charted #59 in the USA only.

- She's No Better Than Me

"She's No Better Than Me" is released on the b-side of the "Alfie" single.

- Ma Piano (Per Non Svegliarmi)*

"Ma Piano (Per Non Svegliarmi)" is released as a single in Italy. It's a beautiful original Italian song, but Cher never recorded this in English. Surprisingly, it's released on cd in Italy only. That cd; "Bella Italia - Omaggio Alla Canzone", is unfortunately very rare and hard to get.

- Nel Mio Cielo Ci Sei Tu**

"Nel Mio Cielo Ci Sei Tu" is the Italian version of "Magic In The Air". It's on the b-side of the "Ma Piano (Per Non Svegliarmi)" single. This song also appears on the Italian LP "Mama". Unfortunately, I don't know exactly what other songs this LP contains.

11. Turn Around
12. So Fine

Singles:

- But You're Mine / Hello
- What Now My Love / I Look For You
- Laugh At Me / Tony (<- instrumental)

This is the second Sonny & Cher album. A beautiful album, also a great success with a few big hits; "But You're Mine" peaked at #15 in the USA, and #17 in the UK. A gorgeous cover of Gilbert Becaud's "What Now My Love" charted #14 in the USA, #13 in the UK and #10 in Belgium. On this album, there's also a solo song by Sonny which would be his only huge hit as a solo singer; "Laugh At Me", which peaked at #10 in USA and #9 in the UK. This album charted #34 in the USA, and #15 in the UK.

- Hello

Sonny & Cher recorded "Hello" to thank all of their fans. It's not an actual song, but more a dialogue. It's released on the b-side of the single "But You're Mine". It's a bonus-track on the 1999 cd-release of "Look At Us". On the 1991 "The Best of Sonny & Cher - The Beat Goes On" compilation, "Hello" features a rare "Go Back To School" radio-commercial by Sonny & Cher.

- Have I Stayed Too Long

"Have I Stayed Too Long" became a small hit, and peaked at #49. It's only released as a single. "Leave Me Be" is on its b-side. It's a bonus-track on the 1999 cd-release of "The Wondrous World Of Sonny & Cher".

- Crying Time

This song was unreleased until 1999, when "The Wondrous World Of Sonny & Cher" is released on cd. On this cd "Crying Time" is a bonus-track. The same goes for the very strong and powerful solo track "The Revolution Kind" by Sonny.

- Je M'en Balance Car Je T'aime**

"Je M'en Balance Car Je T'aime" is the French version of "But You're Mine", and was released in France on a four-track EP, and in Canada on a single. Not every line is in French, there are still some English lines in it from the original English version. The French and Italian songs Cher and Sonny & Cher were making in '66-'67 are not literally translated from the original English lyrics, because "Je M'en Balance Car Je T'aime" actually means; "I Don't Care, But I Love You". "Je M'en Balance Car Je T'aime" was also released on the Sonny & Cher LP "Little Man - Petit Homme (Volume 3)" in France only.

- Mais Tu Es À Moi***

This is the second French version of "But You're Mine". It was only released as a single in Canada, and nowadays extremely hard to find. It's pretty much like "Je M'en Balance Car Je T'aime", but all the English lines in "Je M'en Balance" are now replaced for new French lines. As well as for Sonny's as for Cher's parts. Also strange is the song's title; "Mais Tu Es À Moi", because it's not mentioned in the lyrics at all. It's concidered as the rarest Sonny & Cher song ever.

11. Living For You
12. Cheryl's Goin' Home (Sonny solo)

Singles:

- The Best Goes On / Sing C'est La Vie
- Little Man / Monday
- Living For You / Love Don't Come

"In Case You're In Love" contains very big hits. "The Beat Goes On" was the biggest one, and charted #6 in the USA, #29 in the UK, #2 in France, #5 in Belgium and #8 in Holland. Everyone who mentioned Sonny & Cher, automatically mentioned "I Got You Babe" and "The Beat Goes On". In this year, 1967, they were at the top of their success, also Cher as a solo artist. "Little Man" charted #21 in the USA, #4 in the UK, and charted #1 all over Europe! "Living For You" charted a low #87 in the USA and #44 in the UK. On this album you'll find a stunning rendition of "Stand By Me", mostly solo by Cher. The 1999 cd-release contains three bonus-tracks: "A Beautiful Story", "Good Combination" and "Plastic Man". The album also contains two solo songs by Sonny; "Misty Roses" and "Cheryl's Goin' Home". This album charted #45 in the USA only.

- A Beautiful Story

"A Beautiful Story" charted #53 in the USA and was only released as a single. "Podunk" is on its b-side.

- Good Combination

"Good Combination" charted #56 in the USA and was only released as a single.

- You And Me***

"You And Me" appeared on the b-side of "Good Combination". A very nice song, but unfortunately very rare as well.

- Plastic Man

"Plastic Man" charted #13 in France, and only #74 in the USA and was also only released as a single. "Groovy Kind Of Love" is on its b-side.

- Petit Homme**

This is the French version of "Little Man". It was released as an EP in France. "Petit Homme" was also released on the Sonny & Cher LP "Little Man - Petit Homme (Volume 3)" in France only.

- Picollo Ragazza***

This is the Italian version of "Little Man". It was only released as a single in Italy. The well-known tambourine-intro of "Little Man" is cut out of this version. And the music at the end of this version is a little bit different from the English version. Very strange, but it sounds nice.

Singles:

- It's The Little Things / Plastic Man
- Trust Me / Good Times

In 1967 Sonny & Cher made a movie called "Good Times". It was not a huge success, unfortunately. It's a very funny comedy, and Sonny & Cher are playing themselves in it. This is the soundtrack album with the songs who appear in the movie. "It's The Little Things" charted only #50. "I'm Gonna Love You" was already recorded in 1965 like told before; released on the b-side of the "All I Really Want To Do" single. This album charted #73 in the USA only.

- Caro Cara***

This is the Italian version of "It's The Little Things". It was released as a single in Italy.

- Fantasie***

This is the Italian version of "Don't Talk To Strangers". It was released on the b-side of "Caro Cara".

- Il Cammino Di Ogni Speranza***

"Il Cammino Di Ogni Speranza" by Sonny & Cher was released as a single in Italy.

- L'umanita***

"L'umanita" by Sonny & Cher was released on the b-side of "Il Cammino Di Ogni Speranza". Cher only appears at the end of this song. Sonny & Cher did only a couple of songs in French but apparently Sonny felt much more at ease with the Italian language in which they recorded quite a few songs (also Cher solo). The reason for this will probably be Sonny's Italian background. The duo didn't restrict themselves to recording Italian versions of their USA hits but also came up with three Italian originals; "Il Cammino Di Ogni Speranza", "L'umanita" and "Ma Piano (Per Non Svegliarmi)". All these 12 French and Italian songs of Cher and Sonny & Cher together, are nowadays extremely rare, and unfortunately not released on cd (with the surprising exception of "Ma Piano"). This song is released on some cd in Italy only, which features all kinds of Italian songs by American singers. I haven't found the cd yet.

- Behind The Door / You Don't Have To Say You Love Me

Cher's fourth solo album "With Love". The wonderful Sonny-written ballad "You Better Sit Down, Kids" was a huge hit, and charted #9 in America. "Hey Joe" reached #94, and unfortunately "Mama (When My Dollies Have Babies)" grabbed only #124 and "Behind The Door" charted #97. This album charted #47 in the UK only.

- Bambini Miei Cari***

This is the Italian version of "You Better Sit Down, Kids". It was only released as a single, and in Italy only. The single has "The Click Song Number One" on its b-side. "Bambini Miei Cari" is nowadays extremely hard to get. It's probably impossible to find a copy of the 45. Six years of searching for a copy online hasn't paid off yet. It's concidered as the rarest Cher song ever.

- Mama**

This is the Italian version of "Mama (When My Dollies Have Babies)". It was only released as a single in Italy with on the b-side "Behind The Door". Personally, I think this Italian version sounds a little better than the original English version. It sounds very dramatic, because it's in Italian. And that makes this version very special. However, this version would've been actually "excellent" if the children choir also sang in Italian. This song also appears on the Italian LP "Mama" together with "Nel Mio Cielo Ci Sei Tu". Unfortunately, I don't know exactly what other songs this LP contains.

Singles:

- Take Me For A Little While / Song Called Children
- The Click Song Number One / But I Can't Love You More (<- alternate version)

This is Cher's fifth and last solo album for Imperial records. "Backstage" was not quite a success; no charting singles at all. ''The Click Song Number One'' and ''Take Me For A Little While'' were released as singles, but they didn't do anything. "Backstage" has a different kind of mood because it sounds different than her previous four albums. I think we can call "Backstage" a little more mature and I guess the same goes up for her previous album "With Love". Most of the songs are really good. Especially the remarkable cover of Bob Dylan's ''Masters Of War''. Her wonderful rendition of "Carnival (Manha De Carnaval)" which is a beautiful ballad, and the groovy uptempo "Do You Believe In Magic". Also "The Click Song" is somehow a fav among the die-hard fans, even though she goes off-key quite alot of times! Anyhow, ''Backstage'' should've deserved a lot more attention. You'll find a short conversation of Sonny & Cher on the back of the album sleeve where they talk about making this album. And at one point Cher said; "If you like it, you like it, and if you don't, you don't". She's right. Finally, in May 2007, after years of waiting and e-mailing, BGO released "Backstage" on cd! I'm really happy with this! BGO also re-released her first 4 albums on two stunning double-feature-cd's.

- Yours Until Tomorrow*

This song was only released as a single. It was also her very first solo-single on Atco Records. Her previous albums and singles were produced for Imperial Records. The Sonny & Cher albums and singles were produced for Atco Records. The magazines Billboard and Cash Box wrote: ''Atco Records proudly presents Cher with her new hit-single 'Yours Until Tomorrow', produced by Sonny Bono''. They probably expected a huge hit (if you hear this song, you'll certainly think it was a hit), but it dissapeared very quickly, and it didn't chart. If they had promoted this song a little better, it would've been a hit. And just because of the lack of promotion, Cher missed the bulls eye a lot of times in her carreer. Because she had tons of potential hits! This song was re-released as a bonus-track on the 2001 limited edition cd-release of her 1969 "3614 Jackson Highway" album.

- The Thought Of Loving You*

This song is on the b-side of ''Yours Until Tomorrow''. And also re-released as a bonus-track on the 2001 limited edition cd-release of her 1969 "3614 Jackson Highway" album.

- Gentle Foe***

Cher recorded this song for the soundtrack of the movie/documentary "Once Upon A Wheel". I don't have any further information about this song yet. According to her voice; I'm guessing that this song is from 1971/1972, but I'm not a 100% sure, since some other fans claim that this song is from 1968.

- I Walk On Guilded Splinters / Chastity's Song (Band Of Thieves)
- Lay Baby Lay / Just Enough To Keep Me Hangin' On (released in 1971)

This is her first (and last) solo album on Atco Records. 1968 till 1970 wasn't really a good period for Sonny & Cher and for Cher as a solo artist. The worldwide pop-culture was moving on, but Sonny & Cher kind of stayed in their original lovey-dovey image and style. The pop-music was transformating into political and anti-war songs. Cher's and Sonny & Cher's music couldn't really fit into that anymore and their records wouldn't really sell anymore. For months they had a nightclub act, but the audience didn't pay attention. The only "hit"-single is ''For What It's Worth''. That one became the baddest hit-record Cher ever had; it peaked at #125. Personally, I think that this is one of Cher's finest albums. The whole mood is laid-back, and just wonderful. I consider it the "It's A Man's World" of the 60's! This album charted #160 in the USA only.

Tracks 06, 07, 08, 09 and 10 were released as singles, but the first five tracks remained unreleased. Fortunately, In 2001 Rhino Handmade released a limited edition cd (only 4500 copies) of the album ''3614 Jackson Highway''. This "cancelled album" is featured on it as a bonus! And these five unreleased songs were finally released for the very first time ever. Cher is back!! ''Gypsies, Tramps And Thieves'' immediately shot to #1 when it was released. It also hit #4 in the UK. ''The Way Of Love'' charted #7. Also a lot of other great songs like an incredible version of "He Ain't Heavy... He's My Brother". The catchy, uptempo ballad "When You Find Out Where You're Goin'" is one of my absolute favorites. Same goes for "I Hate To Sleep Alone" and "Fire And Rain". This album has a lot of lead-guitar which gives an extra dimension to the songs. I also really love the beautiful ballad "He'll Never Know". In December of 1971, Sonny & Cher started ''The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour'', which became one of the most populair, and top-rating variety shows for the next three years. With their hilarious and funny sketches, they were a golden duo. With every week millions of viewers, amazing reviews and also HUGE hits at the same time, they were even more sensational than ever before. This album charted #16 in the USA only.

- Am I Blue / How Long Has This Been Going On

Now we have reached my personal all-time favorite Cher album. ''Bittersweet White Light''. It contains old standards from the 20's, 30's and 40's. Even though the album is beautiful, it wasn't really a success. Only ''Am I Blue'' hit the chart and peaked at #111. It's a marvelous track, but apparently not really what the record buying people wanted from Cher, even though her performances of these kind of old-standards on "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" was always the highlight of the show. Maybe one of the reasons why this album didn't do so well, is because it was quickly overshadowed by the major success of her follow-up "Half Breed" album. Her voice sounds simply at its best on this album. The deep smokey sound you hear is amazing. Especially all the long and high "oooh" and "ahhh" 's are breathtaking. The songs really blow me away. It's hard to try to understand that this album is not quite a favorite among Cher-fans though. I mean the way she sounds, and especially the way the songs are arranged. The huge orchestra is simply fantastic. The most fabulous song on the album is definitely "The Man That Got Away". I can just play this album over and over again. This album charted #140 in the USA only.

- The Greatest Show On Earth / You Know Darn Well

This album is a good example of a ''very neglected and a-lack-of promotion-album''. I think this is the best album they ever made together. There are wonderful ballads on it, like ''The Greatest Show On Earth'', ''It Never Rains In Southern California'' and the gorgeous country ballad ''By Love I Mean'' by Cher solo. This album should've deserved a lot more attention! The groovy and swinging ''Mama Was A Rock And Roll Singer'' was a small hit though; only #77. The playlength of this song is 9 minutes. It is also one of my personal fav's of Sonny & Cher. Other great songs are ''I Can See Clearly Now'', ''Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show'' and ''Listen To The Music''. Almost a year after this album was released, Sonny & Cher split up.

Also ''Dark Lady" was a huge success! Another #1 record with the song ''Dark Lady''. It also charted #1 in Sweden. ''Train Of Thought'' charted #27 in the USA and ''I Saw A Man And He Danced With His Wife'' charted #42 in the USA. This is Cher at the top of her success as a solo singer. Many fans concider the albums "Half Breed" and "Dark Lady" as her most beautiful albums. Because they contain a lot of tender (country)ballads. This album charted #69 in the USA only.

- A Woman's Story***

This song is only released as a single. There's also an extended version of "A Woman's Story" with additional new vocals and music. But unfortunately, I have no clue on what single or LP it has been released. At this time, right after Sonny & Cher split up, Cher was dating David Geffen. And Geffen cut a deal with Warner Bros Records and Phil Spector to produce a test single. But it was simply not what was commercial in 1974. But the single came and went without much fanfare.

- Baby I Love You***

This song is on the b-side of the ''A Woman's Story'' single. Both songs didn't chart, unfortunately. "Baby I Love You" is one of the most beautiful love songs Cher has ever recorded.

Yes, opinions of fans about this album are very different. The one says: ''It's her best album ever'' (I'm one of them), and the other says: ''This is her worst''. There's nothing in between, actually. Either you love it or you hate it. After Sonny & Cher split up, Cher began to walk her own way. But there was a lot of experimenting involved. She had her fantastic solo tv-show (top-10 rated!); ''The Cher Show''. But her music-carreer was sliding away. The reason of that seems to be very clear. At this time, Cher's life was like a soap opera. Divorced from Sonny, married with Gregg Allman, divorced from Gregg within a couple of months, a comeback tv-season with Sonny, and on top of that; pregnant by Gregg Allman. So the people didn't quite "bought" her anymore. However, "Stars" reached only #153 in the album-chart. Very bad reviews about it, and not just a single song that charted. But strange enough, for almost every fan is ''Stars'' their favorite album. Also for me. It contains her first rendition of ''Love Hurts'', and other ballads. This album has a very strange/beautiful/rock/weird/country/ballad-mood throughout all the songs. And I guess that makes it so special for all fans today. Today "Stars" is like the most popular Cher album among the fans. Also one of the most discussed subjects regarding Cher, is that "Stars" needs to be released on cd. I hear so many fans talking about it. So let's hope that "Stars" will be released on cd someday. This album charted #153 in the USA only.

''I'd Rather Believe In You'' is just like ''Stars''; neglected and ignored. The album didn't chart at all, and the public didn't pay attention to it, which by the way I find very hard to understand. Although there are very, very good songs on it, that could've been huge hits. The album's producer Michael Omartian said there was ''a lack of promotion''. Well, I totally agree on that, it certainly was! If Warner Bros had spent more time on it and much more advertising for this album, it would have been a success. Every song on this LP was a potential chart-topper. ''Long Distance Love Affair'' got released as a single with on its b-side ''Borrowed Time'', but it didn't work out. Cher recorded this album while she was pregnant by Elijah. She wrote a dedication to him on the back-sleeve: ''And a special thanks to Elijah for waiting until the day after I finished my album. Cher''. Anyway, ten great uptempo but also moving songs which makes this record a true MUST-HAVE for the real die-hards, and a beautiful diamond in the music-catalogue of Cher. Very strange, though, is that the song "Pirate" (from her 1977 album "Cherished") was released as a bonustrack on some edition of "I'd Rather Believe In You"; as the opening track. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly what release it is.

- A Love Like Yours (Don't Come Knocking Every Day)***

Cher recorded this song together with Harry Nilsson. It didn't chart. It's only released as a single. "Just Enough To Keep Me Hangin' On" from the 1969 "3614 Jackson Highway" album is on its b-side.

- War, Paint And Soft Feathers / Send The Man Over

Also ''Cherished'' flopped. The years 1975, 1976 and 1977 were very unsuccessful for Cher. Although she had a huge success with her TV-shows. Because in the fall of 1976 Sonny & Cher start working again with a comeback-season of ''The Sonny & Cher Show''. And as told earlier, ''The Cher Show'' was a top-10 rated show. But her albums wouldn't sale nor chart. Though ''Pirate'' was a small hit, it only reached #93 in Billboard. There is also a single released of ''War, Paint And Soft Feathers'', but didn't chart. In these years, Cher's voice was changing constantly. On ''Cherished'' she sounds very low, and to be honest; she doesn't sing really good in these songs. You can so totally tell that she wasn't into this album at all. And re-uniting with producer Snuff Garett to try to re-create the "Gypsies, Tramps And Thieves" and "Half Breed"-sound for this new album, didn't work. ''Cherished'' is also Cher's first album without her name on the cover. The album has never been released on cd yet. Somewhere; there seems to be an edition of "Cherished" which is entitled "Images", but I don't have any info about that. However, flopped or not flopped; "Cherished" is one of my absolute favorite albums. It means a lot to me. And the album cover is my favorite of all (because Cher signed it for me (YAY!) The picture is beautiful!

In 1976 Cher married Gregg Allman from the famous Allman Brothers. They recorded this great album together. But again; it wasn't a success at all. The album didn't chart, and also the songs didn't chart. Kind of frustrating, because this album contains a lot of great, country/disco tunes. Cher and Gregg tried to recapture the magic of Sonny & Cher's ''I Got You Babe'' with their song ''I Found You Love'', but that didn't work out at all, even though it's the best track on the album. They did a small tour to promote the album, but it didn't help the album sale, unfortunately. ''Shadow Dream Song'' is a solo song by Gregg, and ''Island'' is a wonderful solo by Cher. Rumour has it that she wrote it herself by the name Ilene Rappaport. It's weird, but I'm not sure if it's true. There's also a wonderful cover of Elvis Presley's "Love Me" on the album. ''Two The Hard Way'' is released on cd, but unfortunately, very, very hard to find. And besides that, the cd is probably not an official release. Cher made some incredible ballads during this "Warner Bros. period". Again; so strange that especially those songs didn't hit the charts.

- You're Not Right For Me***

This is the comeback-single of Sonny & Cher but also the absolute farewell-single. They were planning on recording an album together, but it got cancelled. But this song and "Wrong Number" survived and got released on single only. Unfortunately the songs didn't chart.

- Wrong Number***

This song is on the b-side of ''You're Not Right For Me''. ''You're Not Right For Me'' and ''Wrong Number'' are the last songs Sonny & Cher ever recorded together.

1978:

- Living In Sin*

Cher recorded this song together with Gene Simmons from the legendary band Kiss. She doesn't sing in this song. But at one point in the song, Gene gets a phone-call from an obsessed fan, which is Cher... very funny.

Cher is back! A totally "new" Cher, actually. Because of her tv-special "Cher And Other Fantasies", the song "Take Me Home" charted #8! "Wasn't It Good" peaked at #49. Cher totally changed her music-style. The "disco"-era was at its highest level and Cher probably thought; "Well, let's make some disco-tunes too". And she succeeded fantasticly well! The album also contains some wonderful ballads; "Love And Pain", "It's Too Late To Love Me Now" and "My Song (Too Far Gone)". Cher wrote "My Song" about her failed marriage with Gregg. This album charted #25 in the USA only.

"Prisoner" is released shortly after "Take Me Home". But this album was a smaller success than "Take Me Home". "Hell On Wheels" charted #59, but was very successfull in the discotheques. The original album title was supposed to be "Mirror Image". In her tv-special "Cher And Other Fantasies", Cher performed a song called "I'm Not A Number". Unfortunately, they cut it out of the album and it remained unreleased. It would've fit very good with the other 8 songs. Another great disco-ish album; with alot of rock influences.

- Bad Love

Cher recorded "Bad Love" for the film "Foxes". It's released on its soundtrack-album. And in 2003 it got re-released on the double cd-set "The Very Best Of Cher" (although it was never a hit).

Another "new" Cher. Something what she wanted to do for so long; rock 'n roll. Cher became the lead-singer of this hardrock band Black Rose. The band also included Les Dudek. Cher and Les dated for a while. Unfortunately, this album wasn't a success, it didn't chart nor any of the songs, so it quickly dissapeared without a trace left in the charts. After a short tour, and opening for other groups' concerts (like Hall & Oates), Black Rose broke up. Again; if this album was promoted better, it certainly would've been a bigger success. "You Know It" is the only duet on the album, and it's sung with Les Dudek. In 1980/1981 Black Rose was working on a second album, but it got cancelled...

1981:

- Dead Ringer For Love

Cher recorded this song with Meat Loaf. It was a huge hit and charted #5 in the UK and #32 in Holland. It's released on an album by Meat Loaf, and in 1992 it got re-released on a Cher-album for the first time; "Cher's Greatest Hits 1965-1992". The video is awesome, and became one of the very first music-video's on MTV.

Singles:

- Rudy / Do I Ever Cross Your Mind
- I Paralyze / Walk With Me

"I Paralyze" wasn't big, but the album is very good; I'd say a little punk-ish, a very new and refreshing sound for Cher. There were singles released of "Rudy" and "I Paralyze", but none of them made it to the charts, although the song "I Paralyze" was quite popular. She once performed it on a CBS show in front of an unbelievably enthusiastic live audience. "I Paralyze" is one of the most favorite albums by the fans. And did you know the original title was supposed to be "Dangerous Curves"? The song "I Paralyze" is also one of Cher's personal favorites. In "Behind The Music", a tv-special from 2000, Cher says; "I loved it then, and I still love it now, and I want to re-record it". In 1982 Cher also starred on Broadway in Robert Altman's "Come Back To The Five And Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean" co-starring Karen Black and Sandy Dennis. Later on, a movie was made of the play.

1983:

In this year, Cher didn't release any new music. She continued to devolpe her carreer as an actress and she starred in "Silkwood" a movie with Meryl Streep and Kurt Russell based on the true story of Karen Silkwood. She wins the Golden Globe for her role (Dolly Pelliker) as Meryl Streep's (Karen Silkwood) lesbian friend. She also got nominated for an Oscar for "Best Supporting Actress".

1984:

Also in this year, no new songs or new album.

1985:

Also in this year, no new songs or new album. She starred in Peter Bogdanovich's "Mask" with Eric Stoltz and Sam Elliott. In this movie Cher performs the Elvis song "Little Egypt". (Only on the 2004 Director's Cut of the movie). For her role in "Mask" she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress. One of the most beautiful movies ever.

This is the absolute comeback year of Cher. This album ''Cher'' is a huge success. ''I Found Someone'' charted #10 in the USA and #5 in the UK. ''We All Sleep Alone'' charted #14 and #47 in the USA and UK respectively, and ''Skin Deep'' charted #79. Cher re-recorded her sensational 1966 hit ''Bang Bang''. She also starred in three movies; ''Suspect'' with Dennis Quaid and Liam Neeson, ''The Witches Of Eastwick'' with Jack Nicholson and Susan Sarandon and ''Moonstruck'' (for which she won the Oscar for "Best Actress"!) co-starring Nicholas Cage and Olympia Dukakis. Getting signed up for Geffen Records was one of the best moves she ever made. Her two follow-up albums "Heart Of Stone" and "Love Hurts" became instant worldwide chart-toppers. This album charted #32 in the USA, and #26 in the UK.

- After All / Dangerous Times

This album was a huge, huge success! ''If I Could Turn Back Time'' charted #3 and #6 in the USA and UK respectively, also #6 in Holland and Belgium. ''Just Like Jesse James'' charted #8 and #11 in the USA and UK respectively. ''After All'' is a duet together with Peter Cetera. It also appeared in the movie ''Chances Are'' and charted #6 in the USA. ''Heart Of Stone'' charted #20 in the USA, and ''You Wouldn't Know Love'' #55 in the UK. Anyway, huge hits! This album charted #10 in the USA, and #7 in the UK.

- Some Guys***

''Some Guys'' is released on the b-side of the ''If I Could Turn Back Time'' single. Very strange is that this song has never been released on cd.

- Don't Come Cryin' To Me*

Cher recorded this great song for her "Heart Of Stone" album. Unfortunately, I didn't make it to the album, and it remained unreleased until 1999, when it got released on the compilation "If I Could Turn Back Time - The Greatest Hits".

1990:

- The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)

Cher recorded this song for her movie ''Mermaids'' in which she stars together with Winona Ryder and Bob Hoskins. It was a huge hit and charted #1 in UK, #2 in Belgium and #5 in Holland, it peaked at #33 in the USA.

- Baby I'm Yours

Cher recorded this song for the movie ''Mermaids'' as well. The song is released as a single and on the soundtrack album of ''Mermaids''. It also appeared on the b-side of ''The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)'' single.

- Love Hurts / One Small Step
- Love And Understanding / Trail Of Broken Hearts
- Could've Been You / One Small Step
- The Shoop Shoop Song / Baby I'm Yours
- Who You Gonna Believe / ? (only released as a promo)

Also this album was a huge! ''The Shoop Shoop Song'' is included on this album as a surprise bonus-track (because it's not credited in the first release of the album) and charted #1 in the UK as mentioned earlier. ''Love And Understanding'' charted #10 and #17 in the UK and USA respectively, and #9 in Holland and Belgium. ''Save Up All Your Tears'' charted #37 in both UK and USA. Cher re-recorded her 1975 ballad ''Love Hurts'' and it peaked at #43 in the UK. ''Could've Been You'' charted #31 in the UK. Alot of big hits! This album charted #48 in the USA, and #1 in the UK.

- Trail Of Broken Hearts*

''Trail Of Broken Heart'' was released on the single ''Love And Understanding'' and it also appeared on the soundtrack album of the movie ''Days Of Thunder'' starring Tom Cruise. I'm not 100% sure if this song is from 1989 ("Heart Of Stone" recording sessions) or from 1991 ("Love Hurts" recording sessions). Either way, too bad she didn't include it on "Love Hurts". It sure would've been a PERFECT bonus-track. One of the best rock-songs Cher has ever made.

Singles:

- Oh No Not My Baby / Love Hurts
- Whenever You're Near / Could've Been You
- Many Rivers To Cross / Who You Gonna Believe

This album contains NOT all of her greatest hits. Because "Half Breed" is not included, "Take Me Home", "After All" and "You Better Sit Down, Kids" are also not included. That's very strange, because they were bigger hits than "Heart Of Stone" and especially "Bang Bang" (the new version) which didn't chart at all. There are also three new tracks on it; "Oh No Not My Baby", "Whenever You're Near", and "Many Rivers To Cross" which is live. "Oh No Not My Baby" charted #33 in the UK, the fantastic "Whenever You're Near" charted #72 in the UK and "Many Rivers To Cross" charted #37 which became her very first LIVE hit-record. This album charted #1 in the UK only.

- Just Begin Again

Cher recorded this song with David St. Hubbins from Spinal Tap. It's really an inspirational ballad, not many Cher-fans know of. "Just Begin Again" appears on their 1992 album "Break Like The Wind". Her part is amazing. Too bad Cher didn't include these great single tracks on her own albums...

1993:

- I Got You Babe*

Cher re-recorded ''I Got You Babe'' together with the cartoon characters Beavis & Butthead. It charted #9 in Holland, #35 in the UK and #108 in the USA. This new version is so great, and Cher sings it extremely beautiful! But I always found it seriously annoying that Beavis & Butthead are screaming through the greatest parts of Cher's vocals. The cd-single also features the awesome "Fire Down Below" song from the "Cher Live At The Mirage - Extravaganza" show in Las Vegas.

1994:

- It Ain't Necessarily So*

Cher recorded this beautiful song for the tribute album "The Glory Of Gershwin", which also contains songs by other artists. This song is also released as a single, but unfortunately it didn't chart. It could've been a big hit...

14. It's A Man's Man's Man's World

Singles:

- Walking In Memphis
- One By One
- Not Enough Love In The World
- Paradise Is Here
- The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore

This is also one of my personal favorite albums. Wonderful slow ballads. "It's A Man's World" became an instant chart-topper in the United Kingdom. Although it could be better in the USA. ''One By One'' charted #7 and #52 in the UK and USA respectively. In the UK ''Walking In Memphis'' #11, ''The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore'' #26 and "Not Enough Love In The World" charted #31. The 1996 American release of ''It's A Man's World'' is different compared to the European release. Which is strange and also confusing and confusing for fans. Because the first 5 songs on the USA release (''One By One'', ''Not Enough Love In The World'', ''Angels Running'', ''What About The Moonlight'' and ''Paradise Is Here'' have been remixed for unknown reasons, but they sound quite groovy I must say. But- they cut out three songs off the album; ''I Wouldn't Treat A Dog'', ''Don't Come Around Tonight'' and ''Shape Of Things To Come''. Very strange. So the UK edition is highly recommended. This album charted #64 in the USA, and #28 in the UK.

- Love Can Build A Bridge

Cher recorded this song with Neneh Cherry, Chrissie Hynde and Eric Clapton. It's released as a single and it charted #1 in UK! Cher's second #1 in the 90's. This song proves how powerfull Cher's voice actually is. When the three of them are singing in harmony, you can hear Cher very loud above them. Which is typical for Cher's voice; because back in her early days in the music business, she was a back-up singer on a lot of Phil Spector records. Phil frequently told Cher to step back from the microphone because she was "too much out there". Well dear fans, it paid off!

1996:

- A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes*

Cher recorded this wonderful ''goosebumps''-song for the album ''For Our Children Too!: To Benefit Pediatric Aids Foundation''. Cher also starred in the films ''If These Walls Could Talk'' (which she directed) co-starring Demi Moore and Anne Heche and ''Faithful'', an hilarious comedy. Co-starring Chaz Palminteri and Ryan O'Neal.

09. Love Is The Groove
10. We All Sleep Alone

Singles:

- Believe
- Strong Enough
- All Or Nothing
- Dov'è L'amore

This was the ultimate year for Cher. ''Believe'' was an unbelievable success! The song ''Believe'' was a worldwide #1 hit. ''Strong Enough'' charted #1 in Denmark, #3 in France and Germany, and #5 in the UK and also in the top-10 of other countries, but unfortunately it charted #57 in the USA. ''All Or Nothing'' charted #38 in the USA, #9 in Denmark and #12 in the UK. ''Dov'è L'amore'' charted #92 in the USA and #21 in the UK. With ''Believe'', Cher was hotter than ever before. And it became her new trademark. If someone mentioned Cher, he/she automatically mentioned ''Believe''. There's also a wonderful remix of her 1987 hit ''We All Sleep Alone'' on the album. This album charted #4 in the USA, and #8 in the UK.

- Love Is In The Air (Unreleased)

Cher recorded this song (which is originally a disco-classic from the 70's) for her album "Believe", but it isn't released on it. The producers thought the song didn't really fit with the others. I think that's true, but I really like it though! It now wanders around on the internet.

1999:

- Crimson And Clover*

Cher recorded this song with her son Elijah. The song is released on the soundtrack album of the film ''A Walk On The Moon''.

- The Star Spangled Banner*

Cher made a breathtaking rendition of the American national anthem "The Star Spangled Banner". It was released as a cd-single. She also performed it at the opening of the SuperBowl in 1999.

- Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)*

Cher recorded this old Darlene Love song with Rosie O'Donnell, and it was released as a single (probably promo only) and also on Rosie's album ''A Rosie Christmas'' which contains other duets of Rosie with singers. This year Cher returned to the big white screen and starred in the wonderful movie ''Tea With Mussolini'' co-starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Joan Plowright.

This piece of art includes some extremely talented song-writing by Cher. This wonderful album ''Not Commercial'' is not available in stores. It's only released on the internet. The album contains the 1971 song ''Classified 1-A'' as a bonus-track.

- Tell Me (You're Coming Back To Me)*

Cher recorded this song with the band Majic Ship. It's released on their album ''Songwaves Project''.

- Piu Chè Puoi

Cher recorded this song with Eros Ramazotti. It's released on his album ''Stilelibero''. And also on "The Very Best Of Cher" which is released in 2003. It peaked at #17 in Swiss and #61 in Germany. She also co-wrote this song with Eros. Funny "fact"; in this song she probably reaches the lowest point in her vocal range. It sounds very strange/beautiful I think. Truly a magnificent song!

- The Music's No Good Without You
- Song For The Lonely
- Alive Again
- A Different Kind Of Love Song
- When The Money's Gone

Cher is back with another dance-album. It was a big success, but not as big as ''Believe''. ''The Music's No Good Without You'' charted #1 in Russia (!!) and #8 in the UK but it didn't chart in the USA. ''Alive Again'' charted #27 in Germany but it also didn't chart in the USA. ''Song For The Lonely'' charted only #85 in the USA, unfortunately. Cher first wanted to name this album "Son Of Believe". But that idea got thrown away quickly. This album charted #9 in the USA, and #46 in the UK.

- When You Walk Away

This song is on the American release of ''Living Proof'', and it's also released on the single of ''Alive Again''.

- The Look*

This song is on the Japanese release of ''Living Proof''.

2002:

Cher recorded this song for her Farewell Tour. It's not released on CD, only on the DVD of the Farewell Tour.

- Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered

Cher recorded this gorgeous ballad with Rod Stewart. It's released on his album "As Time Goes By; The Great American Songbook - Volume 2".

- Human*

Cher recorded this song for the movie "Stuck On You" which she starred in as herself together with Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear. Unfortunately, the song has never been released on cd yet. It appears in the movie, but also during the end-credits on the dvd.

2004:

No new songs or album.

2005:

- Alfie (unreleased)

Cher re-recorded her 1966 hit "Alfie" for the soundtrack of the re-make of the movie "Alfie". Unfortunately, the producers cut Cher's version off the soundtrack because they thought it was too "Cher-ish". So hopefully, this song will be released someday.

2006:

No new songs or album.

2007:

In July this year, Cher finally confirmed the 4-year (!) running rumour that a new record is in pre-production!!! She told Chrome Hearts Magazine that she is "totally into this album" and that it will be rock and country. Folks, I couldn't be happier! Let's hope it'll be finished soon, this fall was mentioned...

2008:

- I Gotta Be Me (not commercially released yet, only on bootleg cd's of Las Vegas shows)

Cher kicks off in Vegas on May 6th, at the Colloseum in Caesar's Palace. She already broke box-office records with her brand new, amazing show. So far, I have seen 7 shows so far, and they were mindblowing. Even had me a little chat-chat with her during a show last summer! And a wonderful, signed program as result. And of course millions of beautiful memories! But- unfortunately, no new songs or album yet, despite of the rumours.

Cher also made her amazing return as her 70's tv character Laverne, with singing I Gotta Be Me. It appears in her new Las Vegas show. It's a studio-recorded song, so hopefully there will be a dvd of the show sometime soon!

2009:

No new songs or album.

This Spring, we celebrated "45 Years of Cher in Showbusiness". Isn't it amazing! This Spring, it's 45 years ago that Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPiere recorded her very first song "Ringo I Love You", back in 1964, at age 17.

image

Unfortunately, not all albums are (entirely) released on cd. We're speaking about Cher's 4 often-discussed Warner Bros albums, "Stars", "I'd Rather Believe In You, "Cherished" and "Two The Hard Way", and the 4 Sonny & Cher albums from the 70's; "All I Ever Need Is You", "Mama Was A Rock And Roll Singer", "Sonny & Cher Live" and "Sonny & Cher Live In Las Vegas Vol. 2" (although these Sonny & Cher albums are partly released on best-of cd's).

So here's a list of most highly recommended "best-offies" and other good compilations of Cher:

The Very Best Of Cher - 2-disc edition

The Best Of Cher - The Liberty Recordings; 1965 - 1968

The Best Of Sonny & Cher - The Beat Goes On

Sonny & Cher - The Singles +

The Way Of Love

Behind The Door 1964 - 1974

All I Ever Need - The Kapp/MCA Anthology

I'm also a HUGE fan of her music from her shows in the 70's and 80's. It's such a shame that there has never been an LP or cd release with a selection of those amazing, stunning ballads she sang on her shows. Personally, I think that those live songs like "Stormy Weather", "It Had To Be You", "If" and tons of others, are her BEST work ever! Throughout the years I've collected a serious number of them. And in the last two years I started working on my self-created "The True Magic Of Cher Live" cd-collection. It already contains 23 stunning albums. I literally spent hundreds of hours on editing, upgrading the sound-quality, cutting, etc etc. I never expected that keeping up a Cher collection takes up so much time hehe. Actually, it's never finished completely. But of course it's great to work on it, and I love being creative!

This was the entire Complete Discography of Cher. I hope it was usefull for you. I enjoyed writing it while listening to everything. I love Cherilyn with all my heart and soul and I am so proud of her! If you have any questions about it or additional information, please contact me
